How to Choose Brand Colours: The Only Guide You Need

If you want to attract customers to your business, you have to get the branding right. Your brand is a visual representation of your business as a whole and can make or break potential customers’ interest in it. 

In particular, you have to pick the right colours. A killer colour scheme will catch the consumer’s eye, and draw him or her into your products and/or services.

Consider Your Brand Personality

First, you need to consider your brand personality. Is it fun and playful? Is it straightforward and serious? Is it laid-back and humorous? 

All of these personality traits can be captured by specific colours. For instance, a fun and playful personality is characterized more by bright colours than it is by dark colours. Meanwhile, a straightforward and serious personality is characterized by neutral colours like black, white, or gray. 

Choose Two Base Colours

When choosing colours, it’s good to start with just two base colours. These two colours should fall within the same tone spectrum, meaning they should possess similar brightnesses. You don’t want to choose a dark blue and a light purple, for example, but a dark blue and dark purple instead. 

It’s alright to go with light colours as well. For instance, pastel orange and pastel green would look terrific together. 

Find An Appropriate Accent Colour

Your base colours will be used on the vast majority of your marketing materials. However, they shouldn’t act alone. To spice things up a bit, you should provide them with an accent colour. 

This colour should contrast the base colours. By contrasting your base colours with your accent colour, you allow your branding to “pop.” 

Note, though, that you need to be careful not to overuse your accent colour. It should only be used to draw attention to specific elements (like buttons on your web page, for example). If it’s overused, it won’t draw attention to anything. 

Consider A Background Colour

Background colours aren’t always necessary, especially if the primary design is eye-catching on its own. That said, a colourful backdrop can come in handy from time to time. 

For instance, if your logo is particularly bright, you might consider putting a dark background behind it. This dark background would help it to pop, making it more attractive to the viewer. 

Remember, you want your logo to stick out. It won’t stick out of it’s more or less the same colour as its background.
